“Taking in the good, whenever and wherever we find it, gives us new eyes for seeing and living.”
― Krista Tippett, Becoming Wise: An Inquiry into the Mystery and Art of Living
Initial Consultation Session
An initial consultation includes a brief exchange to ensure we are a good fit for each other- does my skillset match up with what your needs and goals. After, intake paperwork will be emailed for you to return or bring with you to your first appointment. We’ll begin the first session spending about a fifteen-minute information-gathering, creating a rough timeline and talk about which techniques could be more beneficial. Then, 55 minutes or more of hands on manual therapy, with a brief check-in post session. All follow-up appointments will include time to check-in and follow-up within the allotted time chosen. Should you want to extend the time to include additional recommendations or sharing of resources, the charge for the session will increase to reflect the total time working together.

What happens during a session & why?
SOMATIC PAIN AND TRAUMA RESPONSE RESOLUTION
How is massage related to trauma resolution? And who has trauma?
Everyone has experienced trauma in their life. Regardless if it was physical, emotional, mental etc, the brain has difficulty distinguishing between physical danger, mental/emotional stress. The effects of trauma can be subtle, overwhelming, manifest as pain or inability to move through a state of flight, flight, freeze or fawn response. Regardless if the experience was physically disabling (car accidents, falls or surgery) or incidents we play off as not being a big deal or ancient history (birth or family dynamics), repetitive movement (constantly reaching high on a shelf, or stagnant unsupportive posture at a desk for years) are other patterns which result in pain, disconnect and trauma response “out of nowhere” when the body has run out of bandwidth to compensate.
Your session will address the proprioceptive rift between body, brain and nervous system that can develop from trauma. The goal of working together is an increased range and ease of motion, decrease in muscle tension, long term pain resolution and becoming a more dynamic person the world.
What does that MEAN and what will it feel like?
Your session will not feel like a “regular massage”. But by moving your body out of a state of distress, you will feel better long term and like there is less background noise in your body. The techniques used by Joanna mostly indirect: Strain/Counterstrain, Craniosacral, Lymphatic Drainage Technique, Myofascial, Craniosacral, Muscle Energy Technique, Active and Passive release, reciprocal inhibition.
If those words are unfamiliar, don’t worry, what they are and why each method is used will be explained.
Another commonality is increasing communication between your brain, muscle tissue, and nervous system. The experience is not aggressive or invasive and makes no demands which forces the tissue to comply. There can be a lot of sensation, but it is always productive. Oil is rarely used, and little to no swedish massage is utilized. If preferred, most sessions can be performed in workout or yoga clothes.
While relaxation isn’t the main goal, clients feel a deep release of tension, decrease in pain and pure delight at their increased movement at the end of the session.
